Pancakes and kogi and dosas oh my! – Silver Lake Jubilee Review

So you might have noticed thus far, my obsession with food. I like it, I love it, I want some more of it as Tim McGraw so thoughtfully put it (though he was talking about some girl, probably Faith Hill.) Street food, hoity toity food – from hot dog carts to Gordon Ramsay and Emeril’s restaurants…I really like food.  Anyone who has seen the size of my a$$ shouldn’t be surprised. I’ve already taken my infant daughter to the Grilled Cheese Truck twice, and lately I had been on the search for more food trucks that were close by. The advent of social networking has really made these trucks more accessible, as you can follow them on Twitter, Facebook, etc. Well, in looking up the Buttermilk Truck’s whereabouts, I discovered they were going to be at the Silver Lake Jubilee. The Buttermilk Truck, in case you don’t know, serves buttermilk biscuit sandwiches, pancakes and on occasion chicken and waffles. I did a little bit more research into the Jubilee and then…I discovered that the Jubilee was going to be the motherload for food trucks. 30+ Food Vendors all in one place along with live music, art and in funky Silver Lake?  Sign me up.

Ev and I packed up Maya and my sister on Saturday morning and with the help of the parking gods, found a spot about a block and a half away from one of the entrances.  There weren’t a lot of people there at 11am, which was nice as we kinda had the run of the place.  After walking around a bit, we spied the Buttermilk truck and even more importantly, the lack of a line!  We ordered two buttermilk biscuit sandwiches with slightly runny (in a good way) egg with applewood smoked bacon, a rosemary hash brown potato bomb (I called it a bomb, they just called it a potato) and red velvet chocolate chip pancake bites with a gooey cream cheesy frosting. To die for…and only for about $13.  Oh. My. Gravy.  On top of the friendly guy taking orders, the food was DELISH. Not too greasy, great flavor, decent portion, great price. My sister ordered the sweet purple yam (ube) pancake bites which were tasty in their own right.

During the rest of the day I sampled some kogi beef tacos from Lee’s Philly (the perfect blend of Mexican and Korean BBQ..sweet, spicy, mouth-watering), a “slumdog” dosa from Dosa (paneer, spinach and potatoes in a giant crepe…gently spiced and filling) and a Hawaiian Breeze smoothie from the Maui Wowi truck as a mango/orange palate cleanser and dessert of sorts….it was one of those days I wished I had 30 stomachs so I could have sampled something from every single truck. But alas, no. The rest of the day was spent milling around, watching some AWESOME drill teams from middle schools that put some of the SYTYCD crowd to shame, listening to some funky local music and checking out the vendors (I bought Maya a onesie from a place called Little Bookwormz that has a John Donne quote on it.)

I am also happy to report that even with this food frenzy, I lost 1.4 pounds this week.  The only thing different I did was take 2 long walks.  Apparently, exercise does work.

  1. Being from Philadelphia, I’m very picky about my Cheese Steaks. That being said, the Lee’s Philly Gogi Truck had one of the BEST Cheese Steaks I’ve had out here in California! If you ever have the opportunity to visit the Lee’s Philly Gogi Truck you must try their Cheese Steak. It was packed and I mean PACKED with Rib-Eye Steak! Hmmmm…I wonder where that truck is today 🙂
