I think most parents and teachers worth their salt do quite a bit toward contributing to expanding the kindness exhibited in the world. Parents are tasked to teach the smallest and sometimes most selfish of humans how to treat others as are teachers, albeit in different ways. We continue these roles as our children and students grow, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
A parent will ask a child to put family before self.
A teacher will ask a student to put classmates before self.
A parent will encourage a child to contribute to community.
A teacher will show a student different ways to become a valuable member of community.
The roles may sometimes cross, depending upon the situation, whether or not parents and teachers are aware. But the bottom line is, the responsibility is shared.
More than anything, I want to show the little monkey that this world will only survive through the amplification of kindness.
Why she shouldn’t be so hard on herself if she makes a mistake.
Why she should understand she is a member of a family, and that her needs might not always come first. They will always be served, just not right away.
Why she should share her knowledge with her peers, and how to do so in a way that comes across as helpful.
Why she should think about her greater community, and what she can do to help those less fortunate.
Why she should think about the consequences of her actions for future generations
Kindness, first, to herself.
Kindness to the smallest circle around her – her family…and to the larger circles outside of this one.
To her classmates, her community, her planet.
This is what we need to endure, and different ways to show my little monkey and my students the way to do this is what I would like to explore.
