P is for Portuguese Citizenship…

I couldn’t possibly let the rest of the Iberian Peninsula go without me addressing it during A to Z – so today “P” is for Portuguese Citizenship.  If you’ve read my “B” post, you’ll know that one day I’d really like to make it to Barcelona, and the rest of Spain.  While I’m there, I’d also love to make my way through Portugal. It is one of the countries ruled by my astrological sign Pisces – whether that is actually relevant to my ever travelling there, I don’t know, but I still think it’s interesting…

Imagine my surprise when I read that Portugal now has a “law of return” — meaning that with perhaps just a little legwork, and luck, I might possibly be able to get Portuguese citizenship. How is this possible you ask? Well, back in 2013, Portugal passed a law that grants citizenship to the descendants of Sephardic Jews who were expelled from the country back in the 1500s due to some overzealous religious bigotry you might have read about in your history books.

From what I’ve read, it looks like Spain is also looking to do the same.  A verified birth certificate, proof of Sephardic ancestry, and proof that you don’t have a criminal record can get you a work or study visa to 28 countries across Europe?? I am so down for this.

I suppose I’ll have to wait for the proof of the Sephardic ancestry first – even more of a reason to get myself back onto www.ancestry.com and find out who I really am.

Stay tuned during the month of April to see what other subjects I want to explore…I’ll return to my senses on May 1.

    • I know right? I actually visited the Portuguese synagogue in Amsterdam along with the historical museum while I was there…I still haven’t been to Ireland, another place for the bucket list! Thanks for reading and commenting 🙂
