Honey, I’m Good

Something I always think of as a parent is the kind of music the little monkey listens to. I know at her age, not a lot sinks in in terms of lyrics, so if she goes around singing Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do” (and the subsequent lyric, touch me like you do) I try not to get my panties in a bunch. More often than not, I’ll have discussions with myself over lyrics of certain songs, or like I did yesterday, I had discussions with the Man.

The song in question was Andy Grammer’s “Honey, I’m Good”… when I first heard it, I thought ohhh….good beat, and I can dance to it!  Fast lyrics, so I can pretend I can white-girl rap, I like!  Then I started listening to the lyrics, really listening…

So this guy, he’s out drinking some night without his lady-love, and he’s telling some other chick (“Honey”) he’s met while out that he better not stick around or he might do something he’ll regret.  That he’s aware of this and that he chooses to stay true to his wife, or girlfriend or whomever is at home is smart, right? Good? Commendable?

My question is, he’s arrived at the point where this girl is wanting to have more drinks with him, he’s made no mention thus far of his lady-love at home, and at the end of things, he’s finally realizing maybe he should be at home with that woman? He’s led “Honey” on to a point where he says, “you’ve got me all wrong, baby” — this sounds exactly like the kind of guy you don’t want to meet in a bar, or anywhere for that matter.  The Man agreed. The lyrics are clear as what his choice is at the end, but he takes some questionable turns on the way there.

Maybe we’re just being too judgey. Either way, I’m still going to be singing the song because it’s catchy as all get out.
